ABOUT THE GARDENS

Our first stop is botanical garden situated on the grounds of a former hunting estate and home to a wide variety of plant species, including rare and exotic plants from all over the world.

Created in the early 19th century by a wealthy landowner and collector of plants, over the years, these gardens were expanded and developed by subsequent owners, and today they cover an area of around 30 acres.

Visitors may explore a network of walking trails that wind their way through the various sections of the garden, including the formal gardens, the woodland areas, and the orchid house. There are also several viewpoints throughout the garden that offer stunning views of the surrounding landscape and the ocean beyond.

Second garden of the day, is at one of the most beautiful gardens in Funchal that includes more than 500 species of plants and a rich history. It is situated on the grounds a historic 18th-century manor house that has been converted into a luxury hotel.

The garden is known for its lush vegetation and diverse collection of exotic plants and flowers, including many species of orchids, azaleas, camellias, and magnolias as well as a collection of centenary trees, such as Dracaena draco from Madeira, Syncarpia glomulifera from Australia, Cinnamomum camphora from China/Japan, as well as many other fantastic varieties from all over the world as the Jacaranda mimosifolia from Brazil, Pandanus útilis and Revenala madagasceriensis from Madagascar.
